Personal Birthing Experience

Personal Birthing Experience
www.fhamekalewis.blogspot.com

My personal experience was in 1993 when I gave birth to twin girls. I had to monitor myself everyday within in a four hour a day time frame with some type of telegraphic machine and then call the hospital for the results. Well this particular  day I was a little late getting on the machine because I was mopping, not knowing the situation that I was in. when I called in my results they told me to go the hospital right away because I was in labor. My twins was born at 7  months weighing 4lbs and 1oz and with in a two hour time frame one of them had drop down to 1lb and 1oz and the other 1lb even. Their  lungs were not fully developed, this happen because there dad was a smoker and inhaling the second hand smoke cause a problem with the developing of their lungs, and because I used to eat ice a lot there was no iron in my blood so it took away from them. My twins stayed in the hospital for three months with one of them almost dying because of this. Now of my twins have epilepsy for the rest of her last. A bubble the size of a golf ball sets between her left brain wall and her right brain wall, and it can not be remove or it will kill her.

I chose this example because it relates to cognitive development- prenatal development of the brain and it also relates to psychosocial development- prenatal exposure to drugs and teratogens harmful substances.

My thoughts regarding birth and child developing is that when carrying and raising a child it's not just your life anymore, its the life of an innocent child. The decisions that you make are based upon both your lives. The health and the development of all children lies within our hands.  I advise anybody to listen to any medical advice that is offered. I say this because looking at what my child have to go through in her life is not easy and I fault nobody but my self.

Part 2
Births in Germany
In Germany midwives  play a major role in the prenatal care and delivery of babies. These midwives are trained by professional doctors. Even though there are doctors on call for people that chose to have their baby in the hospital, they are not the obstetrician.  Birthing mothers are given a chose to have their own personal midwife or get one that is chosen for them. Majority of the births in Germany take place in hospitals like the U.S. but they do not have a neonatal unit so mother who have premature babies or babies that are born with difficulties should have a hospital in the surrounding areas in mind. Because there is neonatal unit in these hospitals, doctors or midwives do not accept patients before 37 weeks of pregnancy.  Just like the U.S. the midwives in Germany use epidurals for pain medication and they also use something that we do not and that is Acupuncture.

  1. Hello Fhameka,

I am so sorry that you had to go through that with your babies. I know that experience was a difficult one for you and your family. Even though she has epilepsy, I am so glad to know that she is still living. GOD BLESS!
